A breed almost nobody in the West knows, descended from exactly the breeds everybody knows.
Why this one, and not another
This is the honest question, and it deserves an honest answer. We will not tell you the Laizhou Hong is better than a German Shepherd or a Malinois. It is not. It is different, and the difference lies in the selection criterion.
Over the past fifty years, German Shepherd and Malinois working lines have been shaped by the pressure of sport: IGP, French ring, mondioring. These are demanding disciplines, and the criterion they reward is drive, intensity and speed of response.
The result is extraordinary dogs. So extraordinary that the world's best protection breeders spend years searching, within those breeds, for the atypically calm individual. That is the individual who works inside a house.
The Laizhou Hong never went through that pressure. It was selected, generation after generation, to guard the property and live with the family in it. The starting point is different.
ComparisonA working-line Malinois is superior in search, detection, patrol and sport. To live inside a family home and protect without turning the routine into energy management, the Laizhou Hong starts somewhere else. That is all, and it is already a great deal.

- Behaviour and temperament
Friendly and calm, extremely devoted to the family. The Laizhou Hong enjoys working and must show good working ability, courage and endurance. Self-confidence and fearlessness are required, as well as adaptability and attention to the social environment.
- Disqualifying faults
- Disqualifying faults: aggression or excessive shyness.
CBKC standard NR32, Group 11, the group of breeds not recognised by the FCI. The letters NR mean exactly that. The breed has a published Brazilian standard and it has no FCI recognition. Both are true at once.

- Black with well-defined markings in intense red on the cheeks, muzzle, throat, chest, legs, above the eyes and beneath the base of the tail

Standard NR32 does not define a weight. The range reported in the literature runs from 30 to 60 kg, and varies considerably with sex and line.
A note on genetics
It would be easy to write here that the Laizhou Hong’s calm is genetic and guaranteed. We will not. A study published in Science in 2022, covering more than eighteen thousand dogs, measured that breed explains roughly nine per cent of behavioural variation between individuals. Variation within a breed exceeds variation between breeds.
What the breed delivers is a better starting point, not a guarantee. The rest is individual selection, training and assessment, and that is exactly the work you are paying us for. Owning that limit is more honest, and more useful to you, than denying it.
